Top 100 Fashion Blogs of 2016

18th Apr 2016

The fashion industry is constantly changing and evolving. With influences coming from every nook and cranny of the media, internet, and more, staying on top of the trends and what's hot and what's not can be quite the undertaking. With so many influencers giving their two cents, the input is seemingly endless. Each year, however, there are a special group of fashion writers and bloggers who consistently rise above the rest thanks to their innovative style, fresh takes, and courage to take chances on new looks.

We've put together a list of the top 100 most influential websites to help celebrate these outstanding individuals and teams who work hard to stay ahead of the curve and create the next trend. Our ranking algorithm described after the list below will provide you with an in-depth, statistical look into the best and brightest fashion writers out there. You'll also get to hear words of wisdom directly from many of the incredible individuals and teams on this list. If you've made the list, we've created custom award graphics just for you at the bottom in several color themes to match your individually unique style. We hope you enjoy the insight these rankings provide and we look forward to seeing where everyone lands in 2017.

The Ratings & Rankings Algorithm:

In the digital age of fashion, social media influence and reach are some of the most important factors which can't be overlooked. In order to be truly successful, however, you have to continually create entertaining, original, and shareable content with your following if you want them to keep coming back. This is where a successful website comes into play.

In order to properly rank each site, our team created a detailed algorithm over several months which used a wide variety of different social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Google+, and Pinterest to help measure the kind of reach each blogger has in the digital space. Once they reach their audience, however, a blogger needs a site with quality content in order to retain a following, which is where we also used highly analytical tools such as Majestic, SEMRush, Twitonomy, Moz, and Alexa. Weights were given in each area to balance the different signals and prevent one very strong or weak area from skewing the overall influence of the blog.

From social media influence to website authority, each one of these elements factored into an overall score which helped accurately rank our top 100 writers and bloggers, as well as several honorable mention nominees.

Their Stories:

We've been working diligently to contact every writer and site owner on our list to let them know about these awards and let them tell us what it's like to be successful in covering the fashion industry. This is a work of passion for much of the members of this prestigious list and they've shared some great advice on how to get started, what keeps them going, and why they chose to be a part of this industry. If you are wanting to get into this blogging field yourself, this is priceless information you can't pass up.

If you are on the awards list and we still haven't heard from you, please email tracy.richards@willyoube.com and we will be happy to share your story alongside your peers anytime. Now, let's hear from the participants!

What made you decide to start writing about fashion?

song of style twitter image

I wouldn't call myself a writer, but I started posting fashion related photos when I started my blog, which originally started out as an interior design blog, but I've always been interested in fashion so it was an easy transition for me.

What is your favorite part about writing and being in the fashion niche?

I think connecting with like-minded people, discovering new personalities and being part of a community is my favorite part.

Even though we are like-minded, we are still so different so it is interesting to see how people interpret fashion.

Do you have any advice for people hoping to start a fashion website or blog of their own? Or anything else that's important to you!

I think finding your own voice is the most important thing because that is the best way to differentiate yourself with other people and that's how you cultivate a following.
Also finding a niche subject whether it be pursuing to be a fashion critic, stylist, or photographer; finding that voice is important too.

What made you decide to start writing about fashion?

I needed an outlet to express myself in a positive way.

What is your favorite part about writing and being in the fashion niche?

I get to express myself more than one way. I can show it through fashion and speaking.

Do you have any advice for people hoping to start a fashion website or blog of their own?

Put yourself out there. Don't wait for an opportunity to come along. Go get it yourself.

#24: Gabifresh.com/blog - Gabi Gregg - @gabifresh

A little about Gabi:

gabi fresh blog twitter image

Gabi Gregg is the LA-based brand consultant and blogger who started her site, GabiFresh.com in 2008 after noticing the lack of fashion resources for plus-size young women. One of the first blogs of its kind, GabiFresh mixes style advice, outfits, and body positivity while rejecting outdated fashion rules and the concept of dressing for your body type. An internationally respected expert, she has contributed to Vogue.it, Refinery29 and Rookie Mag, and was the first plus size contributing editor at InStyle Magazine.

In the summer of 2013, Gabi designed a capsule swimwear collection for online retailer Swimsuits For All. The fan-favorite bikini sold out in less than 48 hours, and the popularity of her "fatkinis" made international headline news. She has since created another three collections with the brand, her next designs will be available in April.

What made you decide to start writing about fashion?

I really started by mistake. I just wanted a place to share things I liked and create things. Really just a creative outlet and one thing lead to another and here I am.

What is your favorite part about writing and being in the fashion niche?

I love the ability to connect with my readers direct and curate my own content. I love how personal and specific I can be.

Do you have any advice for people hoping to start a fashion website or blog of their own?

Stay true to yourself and just be yourself. Don't try and be cool or current, the only success that can be found is in originality now.

I have always enjoyed taking pictures and I have always been a tremendous shopaholic, so as soon as I familiarized with the "world fashion blogger" I told myself "why not give it a try"? And here I am: shopaholic and full-time blogger, all the same time!

What is your favorite part about writing and being in the fashion niche?

I love getting in touch with my readers. Talk to them and have their opinion on what I do. I think it's the best part of being a blogger.

Do you have any advice for people hoping to start a fashion website or blog of their own?

Oh yes! I think people just have to find a topic, a world to write about. There are so many blogs out there and I think that the key of the success is to be unique.

#40: Withlovefromkat.com/blog - Kat Tanita - @kattanita

I have always had a love of fashion and design. I started my blog right after I graduated from college with an Interior Design degree. I moved to NYC right after graduation and landed a job doing PR and Social Media for a small jewelry company. I was inspired to continue writing about fashion since I was surrounded by it everyday!

My advice to people trying to start a blog is don't try to be anyone but yourself. It's so important to be authentic. Do not be afraid to say no to opportunities that don't sit your aesthetic, always have a lawyer review any contract you're thinking of signing, and get a good accountant!

#48: Talesofendearment.com/blog - Natalie Joos - @Jxxsy

What made you decide to start writing about fashion?

natalie joos blog twitter image

I studied journalism and started my writing “career” in magazines like i-D and Dutch. I was mostly writing about music and art projects. I gave up writing when I started to work as a full-time, freelance casting agent. I picked up writing again in 2010 with the launch of my blog. I don’t particularly write about fashion. I write about people and their interest in vintage. And I write about traveling and dating.

What is your favorite part about writing and being in the fashion niche?

I like to tell stories in a vivid way. I think I learned that from my dad. When he tells a story it’s animated and full of laughs and it makes you want to hear more. I like to take my readers on the journey with me, how I met my Muses, what we talked about, what I experienced. My great examples are the Rolling Stone Magazine writers like Josh Eels and Neil Strauss.

Do you have any advice for people hoping to start a fashion website or blog of their own?

Yeah, don’t do it. LOL

Or anything else that’s important to you!

Be true to yourself and stay genuine.

#53: Whatmyboyfriendwore.com/blog - Sergio Ines - @whatmybfwore

What made you decide to start writing about fashion?

I realised that most men's fashion blogs were speaking about designer brands and runway shows. I knew there was a massive market of men who just wanted some advice on how to dress better on a budget, so I started the blog.

What is your favorite part about writing and being in the fashion niche?

Seeing how much the outfits I wear and advice I give can inspire people. I get a lot of positive feedback and it's great to know that you can make such a difference to peoples life's.

Do you have any advice for people hoping to start a fashion website or blog of their own?

My advice is always the same, it takes a lot of hard work, so work hard. Decide on your theme and stick to it, post regularly and try to always create your own content rather than stealing pictures or articles off the web.

I've always had a love for fashion and writing so while I was getting my footing in the world of journalism as I was transitioning out of university, I started my blog to self-publish my thoughts, my take on current trends and fashion history as a whole.

What is your favorite part about writing and being in the fashion niche?

Writing is an integral part of who I am as a person so just being able to express that and connect with people through my blog is absolutely my favourite part of doing all of this!

Do you have any advice for people hoping to start a fashion website or blog of their own?

Embrace your unique voice and really commit to staying authentic - that's what will help position you as unique from other blogs and help you create a committed following!

#71: Redreidinghood.com/blog - Rowan Reiding - @RedReidingHood

What made you decide to start writing about fashion?

rowan reiding blog twitter image

Well, I’ve always been interested in fashion. When me and friends played with our Barbies when we were young, I always was busier with dressing them up than the actual ‘story’ (which my friends thought was very annoying). When I got a bit older I discovered magazines and got a subscription on Cosmogirl. I then found out about the Cosmogirl forum where they had a topic called ‘What are you wearing today’ where girls posted photos of the outfits they were today. I check out the topic and a regular base and suddenly discovered girls were posting links along with their outfits. Those links were from their blogs and that’s how I discovered the concept of ‘fashion blogs’. I started to follow a lot of fashion blogs, which my boyfriend noticed. He told me to start a fashion blog myself, which at first sounded ridiculous to me (it’s a bit egocentric to post photos of yourself, right?). But he kept pushing me and eventually he convinced me to actually start my own fashion blog. That was five years ago and I’m still blogging! Time flies when you have fun ;) So to really answer the question: I guess my boyfriend made me decide to start writing about fashion.

What is your favorite part about writing and being in the fashion niche?

Definitely the awesome opportunities it gave me. I visit PR rooms very often and get lots of invites for Fashion Week. I also got to work with lots of awesome brands and people and I actually think my blog will get me a job after I graduate (I study Communications).

Do you have any advice for people hoping to start a fashion website or blog of their own?

Yes: Good things take time. You definitely have to have a little patience and just enjoy what you’re doing, before you’ll really become noticed. My blog wasn’t popular in a day. God no, it actually took me 1,5 year to really get noticed in the industry. There are just so many fashion blogs out there, so it’s hard to get noticed. Oh, and don’t copycat! Be different and stand out of the crowd, this way people will notice you sooner.

Or anything else that's important to you!

Just have fun doing so! Don’t start doing it for the money, because it won’t make you rich in a day and you won’t be able to keep up with it for so long if you do it for the wrong reasons.

#76: GrasieMercedes.com - Grasie Mercedes - @GrasieMercedes

What made you decide to start writing about fashion?

As an actress you sometimes need to have a supplemental job between projects; I didn't want to wait tables so I started styling part-time. It was when I started working in that world that I discovered fashion blogs. About a year later, I decided to start Style Me Grasie and the rest is history!

What is your favorite part about writing and being in your niche?

It's a creative outlet and I love helping others think outside the box when it comes to fashion. I love color and print and try to incorporate either of both in all my looks, which my readers seem to appreciate and get inspiration from...that's my favorite part.

Do you have any advice for people hoping to start a fashion website or blog of their own?

Just do it and keep doing it. There's no magic formula but it's important to stay true to yourself, be authentic and be consistent. If you stick with it, you'll get a following.

I have always loved fashion so when starting a blog, it was just a natural fit for a topic. I knew it was something I could identify and grow with no matter what stage of life I was in.

What is your favorite part about writing and being in the fashion niche?

Writing has always been a huge interest for me - ever since high school. I originally started my blog just to have a creative writing outlet, and it’s slowly evolved into what it is today. With fashion, there’s a constant change going on - and I love the challenge of staying true to my aesthetic and brand within an ever evolving industry.

Do you have any advice for people hoping to start a fashion website or blog of their own?

Find your niche, own it, and be consistent. Consistency and authenticity are key in this industry. there’s so many people trying to do the same thing as the next - stay focused on yourself and your own goals. That’s when you’ll truly be successful.

#86: Stylishells.blogspot.com/blog - Elle-MayLeckenby

What made you decide to start writing about fashion?

I was always influenced greatly and artistically by photographers, real people from Flickr. This gave me inspiration to take images of my own. Expressing my style just happened to slip in there and became something people kept wanting to see more of!

What is your favorite part about writing and being in the fashion niche?

I just like to meet people throughout it, I love connecting with people on an artistic level and getting to know them more

#88: Blakevond.com/blog - Blake Von D - @BlakeVonD

What made you decide to start writing about fashion?

I sort of stumbled into fashion. I've always considered myself an academic and not really a fashionista.I went from high school to college to grad school to law school and fashion wasn't really something I discussed with the people around me on a daily basis--despite the fact that I've always been drawn to it visually. It was in my sharing of my academic pursuits online that people started to take notice of my personal style and ask questions about where I shopped. Being a struggling college student, I never indulged in designer labels and seeing people embrace my "every day girl" style really made me start to think about fashion differently. It helped me to see that style is about more than labels and price tags, but about self-expression. So I really began to connect with the group of women--college students, young professionals, working moms--whose experiences, budgets and personal style mirrored my own.

What is your favorite part about writing and being in the fashion niche?

One of my favorite parts of being in the fashion space is that I get to express myself and my personality through my personal style and share it others. I enjoy being able to try out different looks and personas with my wardrobe and see how it might inspire others to try new things themselves. But as much as my readers get something from me, I get SO much from them. Some of my favorite--and most trafficked--posts are the ones where I'm talking about what it means to be a young adult and how we're all dealing with the ups and downs of life. Those are the my favorite moments. Just the camaraderie that my readers bring to my blogging experience.

Do you have any advice for people hoping to start a fashion website or blog of their own?

I get asked this question a lot and my advice is always the same..."Just do it!" The hardest part of accomplishing any goal is getting started. Shaking off all the self-doubt and believing in yourself and your vision enough to actually make it a reality. If you wait for the perfect time and the perfect set of circumstances, you'll never get it done. So, just do go for it! The sooner you go for it, the sooner you can show the world how awesome you are.

#91: Glistersandblisters.com - Michelle Koesnadi - @glister_blister

What made you decide to start writing about fashion?

I was finding some activity to do while I always get stuck in heavy traffic after going home from uni. I was already following blogs like Sea of Shoes and Style Bubble at the time. It was that one particular day that I convinced myself to start my blog, Glisters and Blisters.

What is your favorite part about writing and being in your niche?

I simply like to write.. actually I like to write more than I speak. So it is kind of natural for me I guess...

Do you have any advice for people hoping to start a fashion website or blog of their own?

Try to be yourself as much as you can.. and be ready to work long hours ! maintaining a blog, website or any kinds of businesses will take a long time.

Or anything else that's important to you! :)

I always say nothing comes for free in life.. hence my blog name is Glisters and Blisters. So when you see things that shine and "glister", there will be "blisters" and hard work involved as well.

#100: Bambisarmoire.com/blog - Tosha Eason - @tosha_eason

What made you decide to start writing about fashion?

The idea was thrown at me by an old friend, she said to me “You should start a fashion blog.” At the time I had no idea this world even existed, and I wasn’t even sure where to begin. Two years later Bambi’s Armoire was born.

What is your favorite part about writing and being in the fashion niche?

It’s my own little world to share and create in my space. I can share whatever I want, and there really are no limitations. Aside from where blogging has gone these days I still love substance and when fashion/style and substance meet its a wonderful thing.

Do you have any advice for people hoping to start a fashion website or blog of their own?

Well, blogging is so different from when I began, it’s all commercial and marketing now. I would say, please be you no matter what. The world needs more diversity within the world of creativity. Don’t look to duplicate someone else’s aesthetic, create your own. There is nothing more inspiring than someone who is a forward thinker that seeks to bring something fresh and new, even if it’s been done before (which it all really has), that’s the fun part. Also this world of blogging isn’t at all what it seems, be authentic and don’t give in to pressure to falsely increase your numbers. True brands look for quality over quantity and that’s why I’ve been successful and fortunate to work with many of the same brands bloggers with larger numbers work with.

What made you decide to start writing about fashion?

I started to share my daily looks from small town in Germany. I always sticked out, what was normal to me, seemed to be unique to others. Since then, I lived in London, Berlin and now New York. To be creative is one of my biggest gifts. I could put a different photo shoot together every single day.

What is your favorite part about writing and being in the fashion niche?

It's the ability to be creative and create visuals which often are out of the box. This industry allows you to take risks and more than anything else, it allows me self-expression.

Do you have any advice for people hoping to start a fashion website or blog of their own?

JUST START. You will get better and better over time. Quality content is key!!

Or anything else that's important to you!

Be brave. Go after your dreams. Trust your guts!!

I’ve always loved photography, I’ve always loved fashion and I’ve been a personal stylist for 8 years; mix that with my degree in Broadcast Journalism and you have a match made in blogging heaven.

What is your favorite part about writing and being in the fashion niche?

My favorite part of writing my blog is when I get follow-up questions or emails from readers about the product I featured. It’s really rewarding to know that I am connecting and helping others achieve their own personal style.

Do you have any advice for people hoping to start a fashion website or blog of their own?

I would advise someone to pay attention to the business of the blog- analytics, seo, etc. I think so many times that is over looked and I know I made the same mistake. I know it’s so tempting to try and grow a huge social following and it is something you should strive for, BUT, with the intention of driving traffic back to your website. You don’t own your instagram channel, but you do own your blog, so you want to keep the traffic there.
